Abstract

Class 20 (4) In a process for making prestressed concrete beams, the contamination with oil from the mould sides of the reinforcing wires is prevented by securing the wires between tensioning members located above and beyond the ends of the beam mould, partly tensioning the wires to prevent sagging and then lowering the tensioning members in unison to bring the wires to their correct positions within the mould. The apparatus consists of a mould box A containing a number of parallel channel-like moulds. Beyond each end of the mould box is positioned a pair of uprights F each having an arm G from which is suspended a yoke I by means of threaded rods H. The ends of reinforcing wires D are secured to the yokes and are partly tensioned by rams N which bear against uprights O so that the wires do not sag. Templates B, Fig. 4, are inserted into the mould to divide it into the required lengths and the yokes lowered in unison by rotation of the shafts H, the wires entering the mould and being guided by the vertical slots C in the templates. Plates K with transverse slots L are then placed against each template to secure the wires against vertical displacement and the wires brought to their final tension by the rams N. The moulds are then filled with concrete. After the concrete has hardened the wires D are cut, the sides of the mould are removed and the finished beams lifted out.
