Abstract

700,589. Fluid bearings. ROULEMENTS A BILLES MINIATURES SOC. ANON. April 4, 1952 [April 9, 1951], No. 8648/52. Class 12(1) A fluid pressure bearing for a rotary shaft is provided with a circular chamber 3 from which fluid is supplied under pressure through nozzles 4 to pressure chambers 5, which chambers are separated from one another by partitions 6 and nearly closed off at their ends by tongues 8 of spring caps 7, the tongues being fitted closely around the partitions 6 and adapted to clear the shaft by 0.01-0.03 mm. according to the fluid pressure. When the bearing is not under pressure the tongues occupy position 8, as shown at the extreme left hand of Fig. 7. During normal operation, when the shaft is centred, the tongues occupy position 8<SP>1</SP> slightly above the 8 position in Fig. 7. When the shaft is displaced radially as shown, the pressure in the left hand chambers 5 is lowered and their covering tongues moved down from the 8<SP>1</SP> to the 8 position to further increase the clearance gaps and decrease the pressure The tongues on the right of Fig. 7 move further up from the 8<SP>1</SP> to the 8<SP>2</SP> position under increased pressure in the right hand chambers 5, thus decreasing the clearance gaps and further increasing the pressure to provide a restoring force to return the shaft. For a thrust or swivel bearing the chambers 3 and nozzles 4 are disposed at the ends of the shafts, only one cap 7 being provided, whilst in further embodiments the pressure chambers are provided in a dead shaft supporting a body rotating thereon. The fluid employed may be air, petrol, refrigerant liquid, or oil of low viscosity.
