Abstract

700,507. Rotary brushes ; brush stocks. CLARK, I. M. (Regina Corporation). Sept. 13, 1950, No. 22544/50. Class 19 A rotary brush having a brushing surface substantially normal to the axis of rotation of said brush comprises a discoid stock having a plurality of concentric series of sockets therein and bristles secured within said sockets, said bristles forming a substantially planar brushing surface, one series of sockets, near the periphery of said stock, being substantially quadrilateral in cross-section in a plane parallel to said brushing surface and a second series of sockets, adjacent to said first-mentioned series, also being substantially quadrilateral in crosssection in a plane parallel to said brushing surface. The brush may have the series of sockets near the peripheral edge of the stock arranged in a circle about the axis of rotation and the second series in a smaller circle adjacent to and concentric with the first series, the first series having the edges at the mouths thereof which are adjacent to the second series of sockets forming substantially straight lines and the second series of sockets having the edges at the mouths thereof adjacent to the first series of sockets forming substantially straight lines, said last mentioned edges being substantially parallel to said first mentioned edges. Alternatively the brush may comprise a discoid stock in which the sockets nearest the outer peripheral edge of the stock are substantially quadrilateral in cross-section in a plane parallel to the brushing surface, such sockets having the side walls nearest the outer peripheral edge of the brush disposed so that the edges of said side walls at the mouths of said sockets are nearer the outer peripheral edge of the brush than the edges of said side walls at the bases of said sockets, the said sockets having the walls farthest from the peripheral edge of the brush disposed so that the edges of such walls both at the mouths and bases of said sockets are at substantially the same distance from the outer peripheral edge of the brush. Figs. 3 and 4 show incomplete views of a rotary brush having a discoid stock 10 with two inner series of circular sockets 18, 19 and two outer series of sockets of quadrilateral cross-section 20, 21, all series being concentric and each series being staggered angularly with respect to each adjacent series, with tufts of bristles of roughly circular and roughly quadrilateral cross-section 33, 34 and 35, 36 respectively. The outer sockets 20, 21 are of truncated wedge shape. The circular sockets may be expanded at the mouths to facilitate separation of dies in injection moulding operations. The stock is fitted with a hub 14 to accommodate a shaft. The stock may be a single casting of ethyl cellulose or another plastic and may be moulded with sockets in one operation. A two-part die may be used in injection moulding.
