Abstract
700,388. Arc-rupturing in switches. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. June 26, 1951 [Aug. 18, 1950], No. 15120/51. Class 38(5) A switch has an arc chute 15 with a plurality of spaced insulating plates 25, Fig. 2, the plates being slotted at 26 to form an arc passage and having a plurality of apertures 27 to provide auxiliary arc passages to assist in cooling and extinguishing the arc. The apertures in each plate are arranged to extend in a line from the slot towards a top corner of the plate and the lines of apertures in adjacent plates diverge so that the arc is extended as it is driven up through the chute. The apertures in each line diminish in size towards the exhaust end of the chute and the last aperture in each plate may be a triangular slot 29. Also, the apertures may be staggered in a vertical direction, Fig. 4 (not shown). The switch shown in Fig. 1 has a fixed main contact 8, a tertiary contact 9, an arcing contact 10, a moving contact 11, arc runners 19, 20 and a magnetic blow-out structure with a coil 16, a core 17 and poles indicated at 18.
