Abstract
Glyceride oils of the coconut oil group, e.g. coconut oil, palm kernel oil and babassu oil, are reconstructed by heating them with an amount of higher fatty acid (i.e. a fatty acid with 12-18 carbon atoms) in excess of that required to displace the major proportion of combined lower fatty acids (i.e. fatty acids with 6-10 carbon atoms), removing the displaced lower fatty acids from the reaction zone and heating the product with sufficient glycerine to esterify the free fatty acids present and give a neutral or slightly acid product. The displacement may be carried out at temperatures between 250 and 270 DEG C., and also under reduced pressure. A fractionating column may be used to return the higher fatty acids to the reaction zone while allowing the lower fatty acids to vaporize off. An oxide catalyst such as zinc oxide or boric acid may be used in the displacement reaction. The esterification of excess fatty acids with glycerine may be carried out at temperatures between 250 and 270 DEG C. and also under reduced pressure. Initially a stream of carbon dioxide may be used at atmospheric pressure, and then the pressure may be reduced, or the glycerine may be added in two stages. Examples are given.
