Abstract

700,019. Dynamo-electric machines. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 31, 1952 [April 24, 1951 ], No. 9524/51. Class 35. [Also in Group XXXVI] A homopolar motor or generator comprises a permanent magnet 1 pivoted about its axis, and current is passed from the centre at one or both ends to the side surface at the middle of the length so that the current path through the magnet has a radial component, the flux produced by this component reacting with the magnet flux and the closed loop of the external circuit to provide a torque. As shown for use in an indicating instrument, current is supplied at each end centre towards the middle periphery by hair springs 4, 5 respectively, which also provide a restraining force. The device may be made capable of continuous rotation, e.g. for use as a quantity meter or tachometer generator, by replacing the springs by slip-rings. An external magnetic circuit may be used to complete the flux path.
