699,840. Dip-sticks. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and HESS, A. C. Oct. 20, 1952 [Sept. 15, 1951], No. 21715/51. Class 123 (i) A dip-stick, e.g. for the oil in i/c engines, has a mounting for an electric lamp 16 which is adapted to illuminate the maximum and minimum oil-level marks 13 on the stick. The stick comprises a metal, e.g. copper or brass, tube 10 having a slot 12 masked by an internal transparent or translucent rod 11, e.g. of plastic material. The lamp 16 is mounted in a detachable hollow handle 14 containing an electric battery 15 and having a conventional switch 17 on its outer surface, the lamp 16 illuminating the marks 13, which are embraced by the slot 12, and the end of the stick, to facilitate insertion of the stick in e.g. a crankcase, in the dark. In an alternative construction, the rod 11 is replaced by a transparent tube, the lamp 16 being mounted inside this tube, e.g. near the centre of the slot 12.
