Abstract
699,709. Grinding curved slots. HJELMBLAD, K. W. J. July 18, 1951 [Aug. 17, 1950], No. 17089/51. Class 60. A method of finishing a previously-formed spiral groove 3 in a cam plate for adjusting the jaws of a chuck and the like comprises grinding the concave and convex walls 4, 5 of the groove with the conical working-surfaces 9 of grinding tools 8. During the grinding operations, both the workpiece 1 and the tool 8 are rotated and either the workpiece or the tool is traversed ; the tool may also be reciprocated continuously between the top and the bottom of the slot during operations on the walls, or be arranged to make constant contact over the full depth thereof. In finishing the concave wall 4, the arrangement must be such that, for all points in the length of the wall, the radius of curvature of the line of intersection 12, Fig. 2, of an imagined extension of the surface 9 and a plane 7 passing through the bottom 6 of the slot is less than that of the line of intersection of the plane 7 and the wall 4. The axis 11 of the tool 8 should preferably intersect the plane 7 between the groove and the axis of curvature 15 of the wall 4. An analogous arrangement applies during grinding of the convex wall 5, Fig. 3, with the radius of curvature of the wall being less than that of the projection of the conical surface 9 and the axis 11 intersecting the top-surface of the workpiece at a point 17 outside the range between the groove and the axis of curvature 18 of the wall. The wall 5 may also be ground by a tool similar to that of Fig. 1. The bottom 6 of the groove may be ground by two separate tools, each designed for use adjacent one of the walls, or by a single tool, Fig. 6, incorporating the essential features of the separate tools. The radii of curvature of the lines of intersection of imagined extensions of the conical surfaces 20, 21, bounding the working surface 19 of the tool, and the plane 7 are related to the radii of curvature of the walls 4, 5 in the same way as are the surfaces 9 of the tools for grinding the walls 4, 5 respectively. Slots of other than constant width and having a sloping bottom may be finished.
