Abstract

699,569. Veneer lathes. SMITH, R. N. Oct. 7, 1952, No. 25136/52. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIII] A veneer-cutting lathe comprises a cutting- knife 5 on a carriage 4, a pressure-member 6 adjustably mounted above the cutting-knife on an eccentric 7 and one or a pair of adjustable edge-trimming knives 8 for cutting out blemishes extending inwards to varying distances from the ends of the work 3. Each trimming knife 8 is mounted in a carriage 9 slidable between a bar 20 and a face of the pressure-member and is adjustable parallel to the lathe axis by an endless chain or cable 22 and a wheel 23 which may be operated manually or by hydraulic or other power. For locking the manually-operated wheel in position, the handle 25 is pivoted so that it can be engaged between teeth on a graduated disc 26. Each knife can be moved in its carriage 9 into operative position on the work against spring action by a ratchet-lever 12 which rotates a shaft 17 having a pair of cam bars 15 each engaging the end of a spring- loaded plunger 11 on which the knife is mounted.
