Abstract

699,319. Transformers. ARC MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Aug. 29, 1951, No.20426/51. Class 38 (ii). A transformer having a magnetic core in two separate parts one of which is fixed and the other movable has the movable part subdivided into two parts arranged for movement in a single plane, each movable part 12 comprising a carrier 33, parallel to this plane, with stacks of ferromagnetic laminations 34 secured thereto and having guide rails 26 arranged perpendicularly to the plane of the laminations of the fixed part 11 of the core to guide the movable core parts, the carrier 33 having associated therewith spring - loaded plungers 42 which engage with the guiderails 26 so as to prevent random movement of the movable core part. Rotation of a lead-screw 31 which has right and left handed threaded portions causes the two movable parts 12 of the core to move towards, or away from, the fixed part 11 simultaneously thereby to vary the degree of coupling between the primary windings 17, 18 and the secondary windings 21, 22, the laminations 34 acting as magnetic shunts. The laminations 34 also act as magnetic shielding pieces for the carriers 33 which do not therefore become heated due to presence of the magnetic field of the transformer. Slot 55 in the carrier 33 and associated bolts 56 are provided for adjustment for wear on the lead-screw 31. A member, calibrated in amperes, is operated by a linkage from a carrier 33 and is provided to give an indication of the relative positions of the fixed and movable core parts.
