Abstract
699,162. Spray burners. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd. Nov. 30. 1951, No. 28110/51. Class 75(i) In a liquid fuel atomizing burner in which fuel passes under pressure into an orifice chamber through tangential inlet ports or through sets thereof controlled by a valve which in its minimum position opens portions only of the ports or a few ports of each set of ports and in its maximum position opens the whole of the port area, the ports or the portions of the ports which are successively opened are tangential to circles of successively increasing radii centred on the axis of the vortex chamber The burner comprises a sleeve 4 of round, square or polygonal shape having a cylindrical bore in which fits a control piston 5 movable axially by mechanical hydraulic or electrical means to uncover tapered slots 12 in the sleeve to allow fuel to enter a vortex chamber 10 formed by the sleeve 4, an orifice plate 3 and the end of the piston. The slots are so formed that the direction of fuel flow at any part of a slot is tangential to a circle centred on the axis of the swirl chamber, the radii of the circles increasing progressively in the direction of withdrawal of the piston. In another construction the sleeve has a square exterior cross-section and each face is provided with a set of four tangential holes in place of a tangential slot. The holes of each set may be staggered with respect to the corresponding holes in the adjacent faces giving continuous variation in fuel flow and in this case the lowermost holes in two opposite faces may be omitted and the two remaining holes may be made. larger. Specification'579,417 is referred to.
