Abstract
698,923. Supplying and heating liquid fuel. HARPER, W. A., and REBBECK, Sir F. E. Nov. 5, 1951. No. 25787/51. Class 7 (iii). [Also in Group XXIX]. A retarding device for insertion in the fuel pipe leading to one of a pair of fuel injection valves in each cylinder of a compression ignition engine comprises a plurality of concentric elements with helical, sinuous or zig-zag grooves in the faces thereof interconnected to provide a tortuous fuel passage, In Fig. 1, fuel entering at A' flows in succession through helical grooves B, E and H formed in the outer surface of a central core A and sleeves D, G respectively, the device being connected in the pipe leading to one of the injectors at A' and A'. The members A, D, G may be conical and in a modification the grooves are formed parallel to the axis of the device and interconnected at the ends to form a continuous sinuous passage. In Fig. 2 the device comprises a number of plates M bolted between end plates S, T, having an inlet and outlet connection A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, each plate having a sinuous groove N formed in one face and connected to the adjacent groove by a passage O. The plates are aligned. by means of a locating pin V. The grooves or passages in the various devices may be duplicated to form a fuel heating device, one passage carrying the fuel and the other a heating medium.
