Abstract

698,673. Forging-machines. BROMLEY, T. April 17, 1951 [April 17, 1950], No. 9364/50. Class 83 (iv). Heading.-A bolt and rivet heading machine comprises a cutter means 12 for severing lengths from headed stock 14, a rotatable carrier 27 having a number of equidistantly-spaced stock receiving openings 28, means for transferring the lengths of stock from the cutter means 12 to the carrier, a reciprocating heading ram 17 having one or more tools 33, 34, a punch or punches 35, 37 entering the openings 28 from their ends remote from the ram 17 to provide back-up pressure when the blanks are headed, an ejector pin 41 and driving means for operating the cutter, heading ram, punch or punches, carrier and ejector pin in timed relation. The cutter 12 is operated by a cam surface 22 on the heading ram 17, which ram also carries a finger 32 engaging a recess on the carrier 27 to positively locate the carrier during the heading operation. The sheared-off blank is received in a slotted bush 15 and is pushed therefrom into an aperture 28 in the carrier by the punch 35. The carrier is intermittently rotated by a shaft 45 through a crank-pin 48, notched member 50 and gearing 52. The ejector pin 41 is carried on a cam-operated slide 43, which also carries a second pin 41 which closes the rear end of each opening 28 in turn while a stream of cooling and cleansing fluid is directed therein. Two sets of parts may be mounted side-by-side and may be operated simultaneously and driven from the same source, or they may be used alternately.
