Abstract
639,054. 'Forging bolts etc.; shearing. NATIONAL MACHINERY CO. May 8,1947, No. 12467. Convention date, May 15, 1946. [Class 83 (iv)] A forging or heading machine comprises a die block having a stock feeding aperture, a transfer die and a forming die, shearing mechanism comprising a block with a bore to receive the stock to be sheared and mounted for reciprocation across the die block in timed relation to the reciprocation of a header slide, means for forcing a sheared blank from the shearing block and into the transfer die and transfer means mounted on the shearing mechanism so as to be moved clear of the forming die independently of the motion of the shear block. A driven crankshaft 1 reciprocates the header slide' H, Fig. 2, through a -connecting-rod 2 and also drives shafts 10 and 16 through gearing so that they rotate at half the speed of the shaft 1. Shaft 16 carries cams 17 and 18 (not shown) which actuate knock-out arms K1 and K2 while shaft 10 carries cams 11, 12 and 13 actuating a transfer arm 35 and shearing arm 30 and a cam 25 actuating an arm 23 splined at one end to a shaft 21 passing through the slide H and serving to support and actuate an arm A carrying tools T2 and T5 (not shown), movement of the arm 23 bringing either tool into position opposite the die D3. The arm 35 is pivotally mounted on the shear arm 30 and may be moved independently of the arm by a cam-actuated rod 43. A fixed tool T1 is carried by the slide H. The die block B has dies D1, D2 and D3 and across the face of the block between the dies D1 and D2 moves the shearing arm formed with a shearing opening 49 in the outer end of which a punch P is positioned by means of a pin 52 and slot 51. In operation, and assuming the shearing opening 49 to be in alignment with the die D1, stock M will be fed into the opening 49 by feed rollers R until stopped by the end of the punch P, the head of which will abut a gauge or stop arm 48. Movement of the arm 30 will then shear off a length of stock and carry it to a position opposite die D2 into which it is pushed by the action of the fixed tool T1 on the head of the punch P. This action also squares and sizes the blank. After the withdrawal of the shearing tool, the transfer fingers F, Fig. 6, are moved in front of the die D2 and receive the blank as it is discharged by the operation of the knockout pin K1 into the transfer device comprising an arm 35 with a finger 37 to each side of which is resiliently clamped the transfer fingers F shaped as shown. These fingers carry the blank to a position in front of the die D3 into which it is pushed by the tool T2 which also carries out a forming operation. The arm A then moves the tool T3 into position opposite the die and the header slide again advances to carry out a second forming operation. In a modification, Fig. 14, the transfer fingers are carried by a block 82 mounted to slide within an extension of the shear arm under the action of cam-actuated levers 70, 73 and 78.
