Abstract

568,143. Forging bolts, rivets, &c. NEWTON & CO., Ltd., L. H., and HANDS, W. E. Sept. 14, 1943, No. 15063. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging - dies; punching.-A cold forging machine for heading bolts, rivets, &c. has a transverse slide on the heading slide carrying one or more heading punches and a hollow tool that forms the circular upset head into polygonal form and through which the finished blank is ejected. Wire 11 is fed to the machine by geared rollers 13 driven intermittently by a ratchet and pawl on a lever 17 linked at 20 to a crankpin on a disc 22 on the end of a cam-shaft v geared to the main crank-shaft p of the press. A crank-pin 29 is linked at 30 to a slide 26 having a cam groove 27 engaging a pin 28, Fig. 4, on a transverse slide 24 carrying a cutter 23 that cuts off a blank and by aid of a spring finger 31 transfers it to a die e into which it is pushed by the advance of the first heading punch k<1>, Fig. 5, backed up by an abutment 39 and adjusting wedge 38, and fitted with an ejector 40. The die e, Fig. 7, is reversible, is recessed to form a collar o beneath the head, and the forms of recess on the two ends may differ.. After the first stroke of the heading slide m by the crank q, a cam x acts through levers 2, 3 on a rock-shaft to shift the transverse slide j to bring a second heading punch k2, double-ended and reversible, into position to complete the head at the next stroke, after which a further shift brings the hollow blanking die k<3> into position to cut the head to polygonal form, the ejector rod h, that serves as an abutment during heading, being operated by a lever 10 linked at 9 to a cam-operated bell-crank 6, to force the blank through the die to be discharged at 4 to a delivery tube 5.
