To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. F AR ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Struthers. in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented anew and usefullmprovement in Dies for Rivet and Nail Machines, of. which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecifioation, in which Figure 1 is a front view partially in sec-. tion. showing one form of my die in connection With a well known machine.

This invention relates to animprovement in combined die blocks and dies carried thereby for rivet or nail machines and is designed to provide a cheap'and efiicient self contained device of this character having a plurality of dies. one of which is arranged to shear off a piece of wire of a predetermined length and move the same laterally with relation to the main piece of wire, the,
die members being formed and arrangedto clamp the sheared piece of wire betweenv them and hold it in position during the heading operation.
The precisenature of my invention will be best understood by reference tothe accom; panying drawings, which will now be described. it being premised, however, that various changes may bemade in the details of construction and-general arrangement of the Parts, without departing fromtthe spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.

et e -am nd h rislitbnmeae i their springs 16 and 26. 28 is the wire from which the rivets or nails are to be formed and which is fed through the die block at predetermined intervals by any desired mechanism, and 29 is a header which is arranged to upset the end of a sheared blank in a manner hereinafter described.
The strip of wire is fed through the dieblock a predetermined distance for each revolution of the machine, and after the predetermined amount of material has been fed through the die-block, the die members are moved to the left by means of the high portion of the cam 20 acting on the rocker arm 18. This action of the rocker arm will shift the die members to the left or to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to shear a blank of the proper length from the main piece of wire, move said blank in front of the header, and clamp it between the die members 9 and 10. The header is then moved forward to upset the head of the blank and form the head of the rivet. After the header is moved out of engagement with the formed rivet, the low portion of the cam 20 will be engaged by the roller 19 on the rocker arm, so that the spring 30 for returning the rocker arm to its initial position will act and shift the rocker arm to a position to permit the springs 26 and 16 to shift the die members to the right and bring them into register with the opening in the bushing 27. The
stop-rod 11 is adjusted with relation to the opening in the bushing 27 so that it will be stopped short of the point where the recess therein is concentric with the opening in the bushing 27, while the die-member 10 will be moved to a point slightly beyond a point where its recess is concentric with the opening in the bushing. This is done in order to provide a sufficient opening between thedie-members to permit the rod or piece of wire 28 to be fed forward and eject the formed rivet.
The operation is then repeated for forming the next rivet.
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of a removable die block having adjustable guides for the movable die members, together with means for moving said die members relative to an opening in the die block for shearing a blank from the main piece of wire or rod and for clamping said blank in a position to be headed. Also from the provision of adjustable means for stopping one of the die members relative to the other die member to form an opening of suflicient size between the die members to permit the rod from which the blanks are formed to be fed forward and to eject the formed rivet.
I claim.
1. A device of the character described comprising a die block having an opening therethrough for the stock and adapted to therethrough for the stock and adapted to be removably secured to a machine frame, a removable bushing 1n the block, an opening in the bushing registering with the opening through the die block, movable dies in said block, removable guides on said block for the dies, said dies being arranged to be moved laterally with relation to the opening through the bushing to shear a blank from the stock, a stop for the dies for limiting their movement in one direction, and spring. means carried by the block to return the dies in position in front of the opening, substan tially as described.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a die block having an opening therethrough for the stock and adapted to be removably secured to a machine frame, movable dies in saidblock, said dies being arranged to be moved laterally with relation to the opening through the block to shear a blank from the stock, an adjustable stop carried by the die block for limiting the movement of the dies in one direction, and spring means carried by the block to return the dies in position in front of the opening, substantially as described.
4:. A device of the character described, comprising a die block having an opening therethrough for the stock and adapted to be removably secured to a machine frame, movable dies in said block, said dies being arranged to bemoved laterally with relation to the opening through the block to shear a blank from the stock, an adjustable stop carried by the die block for limiting the movement of the dies in one direction, spring means carried by the block to return the dies in position in front of the opening, and an adjustable stop carried by the block for limiting the return movement of one of the dies, substantially as described.
5. A device of the character described comprising adie block having an opening 7 therethrough for the stock and adapted to be removably secured to a machine frame, movable dies in said'block, removable guides on said block for the dies, means for-clamping the guides in position on the block, other means for adjusting the guides relative to the dies, said dies being arranged to be i moved laterally with relation to the opening through the block to sheara blank from the stock, an adjustable stop carried by the block In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set for limiting the movement of the dies in one my hand.
