Abstract

698,556. Beating furs. HOWARTH, S. W. Dec. 24, 1951 [Jan. 4, 1951], No. 301/51. Class. 138 (i). A process for the treatment of a fur-bearing animal skin to remove earth and the like foreign matter, consists in subjecting the skin to alternate beating blows in opposite directions so as to cause a rapid repeated knocking of the skins to and fro and thereby loosen and remove foreign matter from the fur of the skin. Skins are passed through a slot 24 in a casing 23 and through feed rollers 14, 15. Within the machine the loose skin, as it passes through the rollers 14, 15, is beaten by projections 12, 13 of beaters 3, 4 as it is continually knocked up and down alternately by the projections. After passing through the feed rollers and between the beaters the skin falls into a. compartment 25 from whence it is removed through a trap 27. The feed rollers and beaters are rotated from a motor 11. The beaters which are of hollow cast metal have no sharp projections, apertures or corners and are arranged so that when the diametrical plane through the projections of one beater passes through the axis of the other beater, it will also be at right angles to the diametrical plane through the other projections. Also the projections never touch one another. The feed rollers need not be provided in which case the skin is treated one half at a time by the beaters and then removed from the slot 24 instead of passing to the compartment 25.
