Abstract
698,076. Automatic temperature control systems. PYE, Ltd.. July 24, 1950 [Aug. 5, 1949], No. 20475/49. Class 38 (iv). [Also in Group XIII] In a quartz crystal unit to be fitted in an envelope 15, in order to obtain balanced heating of the crystal 10 and of a thermostatic switch 12 controlling the current of an electric heater 18 for the crystal, a thermal baffle 20 is arranged between the heater and the crystal. Moreover, the components are mounted between a pair of spaced plates 13, 14, e.g. circular plates of mica or ceramic material, whose edges contact the wall of the envelope 15 with a sliding fit. The envelope is cylindrical and fitted with a base having pins for electrical connection of the components. The baffle 20, which may be apertured, is said to compensate for the low thermal capacity of the crystal 10 compared with that of a bimetallic strip 22 of the switch. Between the bimetallic strip 22 and a plate 25, on which the strip is mounted and which carries a stationary contact 26, is located an insulating spacer 24. This spacer acts as the dielectric of a condenser formed by the enlarged end 27 of the bimetallic strip and by the plate 25 and which, being in shunt with the switch contacts, acts as a suppressor of interference, as described in Specification 698,089, [Group XXXVII]. The heater element 18 is spaced from the metal baffle-plate 20 by mica or ceramic insulation 21.
