627,152. Temperature-responsive actuating-elements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 26, 1947, No. 16903. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1940. [Class 64(ii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A snap-acting thermostat comprises a snap-acting bimetallic element 14 and a resilient member 16 secured at one end to a supporting structure 12 and at its other end rigidly attached to the bimetallic element at a point in the central longitudinal axis of the element, said resilient member constituting the sole place of support of said element. In the form shown, the bimetallic element comprises a central longitudinally-extending strip 14a separated by a slot at each side thereof from outer strips 14b which extend substantially parallel to the central strip 14a and which are crimped so as to cause the structure to be flexed to an arcuate configuration. The resilient member 16 comprises an elongated spring-member, rigidly attached to the bimetallic element by means of a rivet 32 and slightly bent along a transverse line 17 before being fixed in position, so as to bias the bimetallic element downwardly to a contact-engaging position. The temperature at which the contacts 27, 28 are opened by the snap action of the bimetallic member may be varied by means of an adjusting screw 18 the rounded end of which engages the resilient member 16 and which is threaded into the supporting structure 12 of insulating material, e.g. phenolic resin or the like. Terminals 16, 36 are provided for connection in or to a suitable electric circuit to be controlled by the thermostat.
