Abstract
698,017. Bomb dropping. MARTIN CO., G. L. Sept. 25, 1951 [Nov. 20, 1950], No. 22394/51. Class 9(ii) [Also in Group XXXIII] A bomb bay, opening to the exterior of an aircraft, is fitted with a door which carries bomb supporting and releasing means, and attaching means providing for inverting the door from a position with the bomb load located within the :bomb bay to a position located externally of the aircraft. The door 5 shown carries four bombs 41 and is fitted with detachable casters 70 whereby it may be wheeled to a point beneath the bomb bay in the fuselage 1. The door is raised into place by hoists 72 associated with fittings 73 and cables 74, 78. During the raising movement panels 25, Fig. 6, hinged to the door are swung outwards about their pivots 26 in order to withdraw bolts 14 to which the panels are connected by links 24. The bolts 14 are slidably mounted in guides 13 on the door and, when moved into position by closing the panels 25, serve toconnect the door to trunnions 7 which project from a rock shaft 8. The latter is journalled in bearings in the fuselage and is adapted to be rotated through 180 degrees, at a suitable moment prior to the release of the bombs, in order to bring the bombs to a position beneath the door. As shown in Fig. 10 the bomb release mechanism includes hooks 53, 59, for engaging the bomb lugs 55, 61 and eyes 54, 60 on these hooks for hooking over pivoted hooks 45, 46 which are adapted to be released by solenoids in a known manner. The forward hook 59 is on a pivoted arm 58 and, when the bomb is released and is thrust downwards with considerable velocity by pistons 51, serves to limit rearward movement of the bomb until it has moved some distance clear of the aircraft. In a modification a single large bomb is carried by the door, and in another modification the door carries a plurality of rockets.
