Abstract

The burning of rice husks is controlled so that the silica is converted into tridymite predominantly, the remainder being crystobalite. Conditions specified are the amount of air is such that combustion is slow and complete, and cooling of the mass is prevented.ALSO:Fire resistant and heat insulating material is prepared by converting the silica from rice husks by controlled burning into tridymite predominantly and the remainder crystobalite, adding a solution, at least partially colloidal, of an inorganic material such as the hydrated silicates of trivalent metals or of trivalent metals and alkaline earth metals so that the silica particles are coated without their porosity being affected, and burning slowly and at a high temperature. The initial burning is controlled by the amount of air supplied, being such that combustion is slow and complete, and cooling of the mass is prevented.
