Abstract
A ferrite composition, which may for example, be used for a magnetic core, is made by burning in air or oxygen a mixture of iron carbonyl with the carbonyls of one or more other metals. The iron carbonyl (in the penta-, tetra-, or enneaform) is mixed with the carbonyls of one or more of the metals nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and ruthenium in appropriate proportions, e.g. within the range 4 : 1 to 1 : 3 and heated in air or oxygen until it burns to form the required ferrite compositions in the form of a fine dust which may be collected in a bag filter. The production of NiFe2O4 and Co Fe2 O4 from iron and the other carbonyl mixed in the mol ratio 2 : 1 is described.
