697,049. Idlers for endless-belt conveyers. HEWITT-ROBINS, Inc. June 14, 1951. [June 27, 1950] No. 14101/51. Class 78 (i). An idler construction for the return run of an endless conveyer belt of which the upper or load carrying run is supported by troughing rollers comprises a pair of axially aligned spaced idlers and idler means, intermediate the said idlers, rotatable about an axis parallel to and horizontally spaced from the axes of the idlers, the idlers and idler means being relatively adjustable to raise and lower their axes with respect to one another so as to provide support for the return runs of belts having varying degrees of residual troughing. As shown, idlers 1, 2 are carried on a shaft 3 to support the edge portions of a belt 4, whilst discs 6, 7, 8, 9, preferably of larger diameters than those of the idlers 1, 2, are mounted on a shaft 5. The shafts 3, 5 are mounted in brackets 10, 11 depending from cradles 12 pivotally mounted on pins 13 supported by brackets 14 whereby a belt of greater than average curvature, tending to engage only the idlers 1, 2, will rock the cradle about the pins 13 so as to raise the discs 6, 7, 8, 9 into belt-engaging position. In a modification, means are provided for manually adjusting the relative positions of the shafts 3, 5 and locking them in any desired position.
