Abstract

696,621. Pneumatic separators; cetrifugal separators. FREEPORT SULPHUR Co. Oct. 16, 1951, No. 24116/51. Classes 23 and 117 Apparatus for classifying a stream of high velocity gas laden with solid particles comprises a circulation chamber 11 through which a pulverizing gas e.g. steam is injected by means of jets 28, the chamber being provided with a funnel 38 so as to divide it into upper and lower portions which are in communication both near their peripheries and their centres and with a central pipe 33 which is surrounded by a primary classifying chamber 36 and connects the chamber 11 with a secondary classifying chamber 12 constituting a cyclone which is provided with a discharge pipe 52, a bypass duct 63 communicating with the chambers 11, 12, and 36 and with a jacket 22 provided centrally of the chamber 11. The jacket covers a slot, or a number of aligned openings, 21, Fig. 4, provided in the wall of the chamber 11. The chamber 36 comprises a cylindrical sleeve 29 formed with a turned-in lower edge 30 spaced from the upper edge of the funnel 38, and a conical shell having its lower edge spaced slightly from the sleeve 29. The chamber 12 is provided with a funnel 54, a baffle ring 57, and a tangential opening 62 leading to the upper end of the duct 63. Dampers 33a, 63a, and 65a are provided in the pipe 33, duct 63, and in a branch pipe 65 connecting the duct 63 to the chamber 36. Material to be ,pulverized is fed to the chamber 11 from a hopper 25.
