696,183. Applications of luminescence. MEIJER, L. Dec. 18, 1951, No. 29644/51. Class 39(i) [Also in Group XVIII] A sign or display device comprises a panel 2 made of translucent thermo-plastic synthetic resin bearing display matter 3 in relief on one of its faces and carrying on its other face the same display matter reproduced in translucent luminescent material and in registration with said relief display. The luminiscent display is carried on a sheet 4 of flexible translucent material such as paper or a synthetic resin attached to the rear face of the panel and the background not covered by the luminescent display may be coloured or opaque. Alternatively, the luminescent display may be applied directly to the rear face of the panel. The limbs of the letters or the lines forming the relief display are of arcuate cross section to increase the magnifying effect. A source 6 of ultra-violet light is mounted behind the panel, which is preferably produced by a method (see Group XVIII) utilizing a block bearing the elements of the display or design engraved or etched in depth.
