Abstract

The condensation product of ethylene oxide with a phenol, cresol or xylenol substituted in the nucleus by one or more higher alkyl groups of at least 8 carbon atoms, the condensation product containing 8-16 oxyethylene groups, is mixed with 25-300 per cent of its own weight of disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate and/or tetrasodium pyrophosphate and, if necessary, with an inorganic buffer, so that the final mixture has a pH of 6.5-8.5 on being diluted with 100 times its weight of water. The composition has detergent properties and may be used on cotton at or near the boil and on wool at 50 DEG C. Suitable phenols include p-1:1:3:3-tetramethylbutyl-o-cresol, 6-11:11:11:31-tetramethylbutyl-2:4 dimethylphenol, mixed p-tertiary-dodecylphenols, mixed p-tertiary-undecylphenols, mixed secondary-dodecyl cresylic acids, kerylphenol and 4:6-di-(11:11:31:31-tetramethylbutyl) -o-cresol. The builder preferably comprises substantially equal parts of tetrasodium pyrophosphate and disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate. If the builder is alkaline, an acid buffer salt may be necessary in the composition, and may be chosen from salts such as sodium hydrogen sulphate, sodium dihydrogen orthophosphate and the corresponding water-soluble salts of metals other than sodium. When the builder is acid, alkaline buffer salts such as sodium orthophosphate, sodium carbonate and sodium silicate may be employed. Inert water-soluble diluents such as sodium sulphate, sodium chloride and urea may also be present. Other additional ingredients include secondary longchain alkyl sulphates and alkyl aryl sulphonates to improve the lathering properties, mild oxidising agents such as sodium percarbonate and sodium perborate, an "optical bleach" and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. In the example the detergent effects on cotton at 90 DEG C and wool at 50 DEG C of ethylene oxide condensation products having differing numbers of polyglycol ether groups with and without the pyrophosphate builder are compared. The condensation products are prepared by alkylating ortho-rich cresylic acid with commercial isobutylene to produce tetramethylbutyl cresylic acid mixed with a little di-(tetramethylbutyl) cresylic acid, and this mixture is condensed with ethylene oxide to give products containing 6-18 oxyethylene groups. The detergent composition comprises 0.04 per cent by weight of the condensation product with and without the addition of 200 per cent by weight of the condensate of a 1:1 mixture of tetrasodium pyrophosphate and disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate.
