Abstract
696,011. Optical systems. PERKIN-ELMER CORPORATION. Nov. 12, 1951 [Feb. 15, 1951], No. 26447/51. Classes 97 (i) and 98 (i). A corrected optical system, particularly for a telescope, comprises a collective reflector, an aspheric correcting plate in the path of the light travelling towards the reflector and spaced therefrom by a distance ranging from 0.75 Fm to 1.0 Fm, where Fm is the focal length of the reflector, and an achromatic collective lens component in the converging beam from the reflector and spaced from this latter by a distance ranging between 0.95 Fm and 0.80 Fm, the achromatic component being positioned and bent to eliminate the coma and astigmatism of the reflector for a stop lying at the correcting plate, and the latter being figured to eliminate the spherical aberration of the system as a whole. The reflector may have the form of an oblate spheroid, a sphere or a paraboloid, and the lens may be such as to produce a flat focal plane. In the form shown in Fig. 1 a spherical reflector 11 is located in a tube 10 at the other end of which the aspheric plate 12 is supported. The plate has a central aperture in which is located the mount 14 of an achromatic doublet 15, which mount may also support a photographic plate 19. Alternatively the focus of the system may be deflected to the side by a diagonal mirror.
