Abstract

695,925. Producing carbonyl metals. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. Sept. 21, 1951 [Jan. 22, 1951], No. .22175/51. Classes 72 and 82(i) Carbonyl metal, of very small particle size and of uniform size distribution, is produced by thermally decomposing metal carbonyl in the free space of a reactor whilst subjecting the metal carbonyl to a sonic vibration. The term "sonic vibration" means one of the sound wave type irrespective of its frequency. The metal may be iron, cobalt, nickel or molybdenum. In the apparatus shown, the metal carbonyl vapours, e.g. iron penta carbonyl, enters from an evaporator through a line 5 into the reaction zone 4, the temperature of which is kept at 470-490‹F by heating coils 3. A 10 kW sonic generator 6, driven by carbon monoxide from a compressor 7 via a line 8, produces 3 kc vibrations which cause a 10-20‹F local rise in temperature in the zone 4. Some carbonyl metal is removed through an opening 14 in the bottom of the reactor and the remainder removed by the magnetic separator 11 from the carbon monoxide stream produced by the process and passing out at 12. Some of the carbon monoxide is combined with the throughput of the sonic generator and returned to the compressor 7 and the remainder is sent via a line 13 to, a gasholder.
