Abstract

A composition for protecting ferrous metals against corrosion comprises (1) a novolac, e.g. from o-cresol and formaldehyde; (2) ferric chloride or bromide; (3) a solvent for the novolac and halide, e.g. methanol or diacetone alcohol; and (4) a small quantity of alkali, e.g. ammonia. A plasticizer, e.g. tricresyl-phosphate or dibutyl-phthalate may be added.ALSO:Ferrous metals are protected against corrosion by coating them with a composition of (1) a phenol-aldehyde novolac resin, e.g. from o-cresol and formaldehyde, (2) ferric chloride or bromide, (3) solvent for the novolac and halide, e.g. methanol or diacetone alcohol and (4) a small quantity of alkali, e.g. ammonia. A plasticizer, e.g: tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate may be added. The novolac reacts with rust to form a dye on the metal surface and also forms a protective film.
