Abstract
1,243,026. Fire retardant coating. CHEMISCHE WERKE ALBERT. 28 Aug., 1968 [2 Sept., 1967], No. 41172/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Substrates, e.g. wood and steel may be coated with a fire retardant composition capable of foaming in the presence of fire, comprising an aqueous precondensate of urea and dicyandiamide with formaldehyde, an ammonium salt of a phosphoric acid, a skeletonforming material, and a mixture of glass fibres and asbestos amounting to 5-20wt% of the total composition. Preferably the glass/asbestos ratio is 25:75 to 70:30. The skeleton-forming material may be, e.g. dextrin, starch, sugar or protein. Further fire-retardant inorganic salts, e.g. ammonium sulphate or chloride, boric acid, or alkali metal borates, and further mineral fillers, e.g. silicates, trass flour, talc, ground shale, quartz powder, micromica, pumice powder, slag wool and foundry wool, up to 20wt% of the total composition, may be added. There may also be added flameretardant chloro-and bromo-organic compounds, flowing agents, thixotropic agents, fungicides, pigments and antifrothing compounds. In Examples mixtures of glass wool and asbestos flour and optionally kieselguhr are added to resins derived from formaldehyde, urea, dicyandiamide, monoammonium phosphate, dextrin and optionally boric acid or a phenol resol resin or an aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl acetate and trichlorethyl phosphate. The compositions are tested as coatings on steel panels previously undercoated with a butylated urea-modified phenol resol resin, a polyvinyl butyral and zinc chromate in an organic solvent.
