Abstract
695,018. Cable making machine. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 9, 1951 [March 10, 1950], No. 6072/50. Class 36. A machine for making a coaxial cable in which the conductors are spaced apart by insulating discs comprises a wheel 13 provided with a peripheral flange having a plurality of slots 15 extending through it, a device for feeding centrally apertured discs 2 into the slots from the inside of the flange, means for making radial slits in the discs, and means for applying the slit discs to the conductor 23 from the outside of the flange. The discs are fed from a supply hopper to shoot 11 in which they travel downwards under gravity to the inner side of the flange, which comprises a number of sections 14 separated by slots 15, and which is grooved on its outer surface. As a slot 15 passes under shoot 11 a disc falls into the slot and is then carried past knife 18 which projects into the groove on the flange, and slits the disc radially. Arcuate guide members 19, 20 are provided both inside and outside the flange to retain the discs in the slots 15, part of the outer guide 19 having a ridge 22 (Fig. 7) which forms a continuation of knife 18 and lies in the groove of the flange, thus holding the slit open as the disc travels round with the applicator wheel. The conductor 23 is moved tangentially across the topmost part of the wheel 13, so that it lies in the groove of the flange. Before the disc reaches the conductor 23 the ridge 22 is widened to wedge-shape, Fig. 7 (A-D) at the same time being tapered in the radial direction, allowing the conductor to enter the slit until it reaches the central aperture of the disc, when the slit closes, Fig. 7 (E). A tubular outer conductor (not shown) is finally applied to the insulated core 23. Specifications 458,772, 625,534 and 631,914 are referred to.
