Abstract
694,201. Cable making machines. SOUTHERN UNITED TELEPHONE CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 21, 1951 [Nov. 22, 1950], No. 28564/50. Class 36. Apparatus for applying insulating discs to a wire comprises a carrier to receive and feed the axially apertured discs one at a time, edge on to the wire, and a cutting device which is movable across the path of a disc in the carrier during the feeding movement and the leading edge of which makes a radial slit in the disc before the feeding movement begins. A rotating wheel 1 carries three regularly spaced wedge-shaped cutters 2 having radially extending cutting edges 3. The cutters move in the opposite sense to the wire 4, which engages in a slot 5 in the outer face of each cutter 2. The wheel 1 also carries a cam 6 which gives reciprocating radial movement to one end of a carrier 7. An insulating disc 9 passes down a vertical shoot, Fig. 2 (not shown), into a slot 18 in the end of carrier 7 and is held in position by the inner concave face 20 of a peripheral upstanding projection on wheel 1. The carrier has a horizontal slot for the passage of the cutter 2 and to permit wire 4 and disc 9 to be brought together. A vertical surface 11 on the carrier is held against the cam surfaces by a spring 12. When the surface 11 is against cam surface 23, the carrier is stationary and the leading edge 3 of a cutter 2 makes a radial slit in disc 9, the slit being expanded by the wedge-shaped rail of the cutter as the carrier begins its movement, on surface 14 of the cam, towards the wire. The carrier continues on this surface until the cutter passes out of the path of the disc and the expanded slit slips over the wire 4, when the surface 11 slips over point 15 on to the retraction surface 16 of the cam. The disc is no longer restrained by the carrier and moves away on the wire, while the next disc falls into position in the carrier. Discs may be applied from opposite sides of the conductor by two synchronously driven arrangements.
