Abstract
641,037. Cable-making machines. DEHN, S. G. (Soc. Anon. de Telecommunications). May 7, 1948, No. 12621. [Class 36] A machine for cutting out and placing insulating discs on conductors of single or multi-core high frequency cables includes a punch die 5 and a turntable 2 having perforations 3 therein to receive the discs and carry them round to a position where they can be transferred to the conductor. A strip 4 of insulating material such as polythene is fed into the machine and discs are cut therefrom by die 5 and pushed up into a perforation 3 while the turntable 2 is stationary. The turntable 2 then moves forward a step, the die 5 being withdrawn to allow the strip 4 to move forward. A second disc is punched while the first'one is opposite a punch 6 which makes a central hole in the disc. The disc continues step-by-step in the turntable until it reaches a fixed die 8 and punch die 9 which pushes the disc out of the turntable, past a knife 15 which slits it radially, and into a receptacle 12. The receptacle 12 then moves across to force the disc on to a moving conductor 18 which is fed through the axial bore of a pusher 19. The pusher moves along with the disc for a short distance and serves to straighten it on the conductor. A second turntable with associated dies may be arranged to apply discs cut from an insulating strip 4<SP>1</SP> alternately with those cut from strip 4, both sides of the machine being driven from a common shaft 16 with 180 degrees difference, so that they operate alternately. A modified form of machine is described (Fig. 4, not shown), which applies suitably punched discs to multi-conductor cables. In this case the discs are punched out having the same number of slits as there are conductors, as in Fig. 3, and are fed into the central space between the conductors while the conductors are held apart. When the disc is in position the conductors close thereon forcing themselves into the slits. As before, a pusher is provided to travel along with the disc for a short distance. Specification 616,896 is referred to.
