Abstract
674,560. Machines for making air-space cables. SOC. ALSACIENNE DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES. June 22, 1950 [Sept. 3, 1949], No. 15661/50. Class 36. A machine for placing insulating discs on a conductor comprises a duct through which the discs are fed into a channel which is at right angles to the duct, and a piston which pushes each disc along one channel to meet a knife which radially slits and is straddled by the disc prior to the disc being placed on the conductor which is carried by a wheel. Discs 11, 11a fed down duct 10 to channel 7 in which is located piston 9. As the piston moves forward the disc 11 is pushed towards knife 12 which slits the disc radially. The piston 9 has a longitudinal groove 9a so that it can continue forward into channel 8 over the knife 12, pushing the disc 11 along the knife and on to the conductor 3. The piston then moves back, permitting the next disc to drop into the channel 7. Channel 8 is formed between two blocks 6a, 6b (Fig. 2), each of which is provided with an oblique groove in which a tappet 14 can move. These tappets support the disc 11 in the correct position as it is pushed towards the knife, and are themselves pushed along the oblique grooves by the disc until they are held clear of the channel 8 by the piston 9. As the piston returns to the starting position the tappets are drawn back across the channel 8 by the action of spring 19 against ring 18 which carries rods 16 secured to the tappets 14. The reciprocating motion of the piston is derived from the angular displacement of lever 20, moved by any suitable means to which it is connected by a lost-motion device.
