Abstract

An adhesive which, mixed with water, yields a viscosity-stable paste suitable for bottle labels, comprises casein, a casein solubilizer or dispersant, which must include an organic amide e.g. urea, and not more than 10 per cent. of an alkaline earth base or salt computed on the dry weight of casein. Water may be the largest component of the paste, the weight of casein therein may be greater than the weight of the amide and the weight of the alkaline earth component may be not more than 2 per cent. of the paste. The alkaline earth component may be barium oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, acetate or chloride, calcium nitrate or chloride or strontium acetate or chloride. A zinc compound, e.g. zinc oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, or zinc ammonium chloride may be added to increase the water resistance. The solubilizer may also include ammonium hydroxide or thiocyanate, borax, sodium hydroxide or sodium salicylate. Phenol and soya flour may be added.
