Abstract
694,170. Turbine blades. MACHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.-GES. Sept. 8, 1949 [Oct. 22, 1948], No. 23314/49. Class 110(iii) A machine component of ceramic or ceramic-like material for use in a heat engine where it is subjected simultaneoutly to both high temperature and to mechanical loading, for example a turbine blade, is formed of two different ceramic materials. One part of the component, in the case of a turbine blade, the effective portion of the blade, which is exposed to the action of heat to a greater extent than the root portion, consists predominantly of a ceramic material capable of withstanding high temperature, while a second part, in the case of the turbine blade, the root portion, which is subjected to greater mechanical loading than the effective portion, consists predominantly of a ceramic material capable of withstanding greater mechanical stress than the first material and capable also of withstanding high temperatures. The two parts are integrally united and the proportion of the two materials varies continuously from one cross-section of the component to the next, the cross-section being taken transverse to the longitudinal axis. In the turbine blade shown, the ceramic material capable of withstanding high temperature variations forms an envelope around the ceramic material capable of withstanding greater mechanical stress, the proportion of the former material being greater in the effective portion of the blade while the proportion of the latter material is greater in the root.
