693,863. Sharpening plane irons, chisels &c. VAFFIADIS, C. March 18, 1952 [April 30, 1951], No. 10080/51. Class 60. Apparatus for sharpening tools such as wood plane irons and chisels comprises a plywood bed 1 having at one end side walls 2 and an end wall 3 forming a socket for the end of an oilstone 4. A removable cover 5 for the oilstone has projections on its side walls fitting into recesses 3a in the end wall 3. The bed 1 extends at 1a beyond the oilstone and is covered by a steel plate 1b forming a track for the tool carrier roller or wheel 8. Stops 12 on the track engage the roller or wheel at the end of each stroke to prevent over-running of the ends of the stone by the tool edge; the stops consist of bars extending across the width of the track and provided with pairs of dowels 12a fitting into sockets 13, two pairs of sockets being provided at each end of the track to permit adjustment. The tool carrier comprises a bar 6 through one end of which extends a stem 7 secured in adjusted position by a screw 9 and carrying at its lower end the roller 8. The other end of the bar 6 is formed with an inclined plate 6a having studs 6b extending through a tool clamping plate 6c and fitted with wing nuts 6d; the plates are urged apart by plate springs 10 riveted to the plate 6c or by helical springs surrounding the studs 6b. Handlebars 11 are screwed from each side into the carrier bar. A T piece or square 14 is slidably mounted on the clamping plate 6c ; the leg of the T is embraced by a guide block 6e and a plate spring 15 attached to the guide block frictionally holds the T in adjusted position. The leg of the T may have a scale. The T is drawn out for measuring or indicating the correct distance of the edge of the tool from the edge of the clamping plates and is also used for checking whether the sharpened edge is square to the plates and square sides of the tool itself.
