Abstract

693,643. Angle measuring instruments; scale reading apparatus. ZEISS - OPTON OPTISCHE WERKE OBERKOCHEN GES. Dec. 4, 1950 [Dec. 8, 1949], No. 29598/50. Classes 97 (i) and 97 (ii) In an angle-measuring instrument such as a theodolite, in which double lines are produced by forming in the plane of a graduation 3, Fig. 1, the image of a diametrically opposed graduation 31, four graduation lines, each separated by a right angle, are combined into double lines so as to obtain the mean of four reading positions simultaneously. The prism 7, which in conjunction with lenses 6 and prism 8 forms an image of graduation 3<SP>1</SP> which may be viewed by microscope 5, has an additional prism 10 cemented thereupon to avoid the numbering 41 of the graduation 3<SP>1</SP> causing a confusing image adjacent the numbering 4. The two sets of double lines are presented in the reading microscope as counter-running images as shown in Fig. 4, the images being displaced into coincidence by plane parallel plates or movable wedges, the corresponding image displacement being read off on accessory scale such as a micrometer screw. In a modification, Fig. 5, two sets of graduations are applied in a single operation by two dividing engines displaced against one another by half a right angle plus or minus half a line interval so that the lines of one graduation lie between those of the other. A line of one graduation, say 0, is then combined with the diametrically-opposed line 150a of the other graduation and presented as a counterrunning image to the double line formed from 100 and 250a. If the reading is repeated in the second telescope position the mean of eight reading places is obtained.
