Abstract

991, 873. Photo-electric positions determination; optical pointers. M. HENSOLDT UND SOHNE, OPTISCHE WERKE A. G. Dec. 3, 1962 [Dec. 4, 1961; March 15, 1962 (2); Sept. 22, 1962], No. 45475/62. Headings G1A and G1M. [Also in Division G4] A displacement measuring system is characterized in that a first scale is imaged either on to a second fixed scale, or on to itself or on to a window by an optical system including a chain of reflecting surfaces moved in accordance with the displacement that is to be determined. As described a millimetre scale 201, Fig. 20 is imaged on to a window 210 carrying an index mark 212<SP>1</SP>, the light path including one of a chain of reflecting prisms 204 attached to a glass plate 205 whose displacement-in the direction of arrow 206-is being measured. The arrangement operates as follows. A "coarse" indication of a displacement of plate 205 is provided by a rack and pinion controlled indicator 216 which projects its reading via a half-silvered mirror 213 on to the window 210 and a "fine" indication of the displacement is provided by a micrometer screw 211 which is rotated by hand until the image of scale 201 in the window is bought to a position where one of its graduations again registers with the index mark 212<SP>1</SP>. A modification using two phase-displaced chains of prisms on the displaceable plate is described (Figs. 22, 23 and 24 not shown). A number of photo-electric modifications are described, the majority employ fringe counting techniques (see Division G4) but one Figs. 28, 29, and 30 uses a sinusoidally shaped curve which is imaged on to three cells 404, 405, 406 spaced by 120 degrees, the resulting output signals controlling a rotary indicator Fig. 29, complete revolutions of which are counted by a further photo-electric system Fig. 30, and another Fig. 37 uses a mechanically oscillated receiving grating so that displacement of the mirror system (not shown in Fig. 37) manifests itself as a change in phase of the light that passes the grating.
