Abstract
688,819. Optical apparatus. BRITISH OPTICAL & PRECISION ENGINEERS, Ltd. Nov. 9, 1951, No. 26287/51. Classes 97 (i) and 98 (i). In an electroscope having a compound microscope with a graticule on which an image of the indicating member of the electroscope is formed by which its movement can be measured, the microscope is provided with optical means for moving the image across the graticule to set it to a given position thereon. As shown, the electroscope includes a movable quartz fibre 5, an image of of which is formed on a graticule 4 by an objective 3 and is observed in an eye-piece 2. A wedge 14 in a holder 15 is rotatable about the axis of the microscope and serves to adjust the image to a standard position on the graticule scale when a standard voltage is applied the the instrument, thereby allowing manufacturing differences to be compensated. The wedge may be attached to the objective, or the latter may comprise a rotatable lens having its optical axis eccentric to that of the microscope tube.
