Abstract

638,607. Optical scale-reading apparatus. HILGER & WATTS, Ltd., and TOWNS, V. W. H. Jan. 24, 1948, Nos. 2216 and 15458. [ Classes 97 (i) and 97 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] An optical system forms magnified images from two corresponding portions of a scale or of adjacent scales, the image of the first portion at a sufficiently low magnification to allow of the figures on the scale to be distinguished and the image of the second portion at a higher magnification to give a more accurate reading intermediate two scale divisions. As applied to the reading of a circular scale in which images of diametrically opposite points of a scale are viewed simultaneously, the scale is preferably of the forms shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The system comprises a prism 5, lenses 6 and prism 8 which form an image of the portion B of the scale, carried on a glass ring 2, against the diametrically opposite portion C or vice versa. Images of these superimposed scale images and of the scale A are formed by prism 9 and lenses 10 in the plane of a scale 11 connected to a pivoted refractor block 7 by which the image formed by the lenses 6 may be moved, the scale 11 indicating the degree of movement. Images A, D, Fig. 3, of the scales A and 11 are formed at ordinary magnification on a screen 14 by prism 12, lens 13 and mirror 16 while an image at larger magnification of the superposed scales B, C is formed by the prism 12a and lenses 13a. Alternatively, the images may be viewed in a microscope eyepiece. The invention is applicable to circular tables and dividing heads for machine tools and may be applied to linear scales.
