Abstract
693,397. Rolling; winding. CRUCIBLE STEEL CO. OF AMERICA. April 4, 1951 [April 4, 1950], No. 7868/51. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XII] A coiling reel for use in rolling mills comprises a wide and flat central blade member mounted on a shaft, an arcuately-shaped, peripheral blade member of semi-cylindrical external contour hingedly mounted along one edge thereof to an edge of said central blade and spacing means for maintaining the free edge of said peripheral blade in spaced relation to said central blade to provide a slot for the reception of an end of strip material to be coiled. A four-high, reversing hot-strip mill embodies a coiling reel comprising a hollow central blade member 10 and peripheral blade members 11 and 12. A sleeve 17 extends axially through the central blade and is formed integral with the upper and lower blade surfaces 13 and 14 respectively and terminates at each end in bushings 20, 21 for reception of a water-cooled driveshaft 22. The bushings 20 and 21 have elliptical end-plates 20a and 21a. The arcuately-shaped peripheral blades 11 and 12 comprise outer and inner surfaces 23 and 24, respectively which meet in a lip portion 25 and hinge portions 33, 35 which interleave with portions 29, 30 on the central blade. Pintles 38, 39 are inserted through aligned bores in the hinges. Each peripheral blade has ribs 27, 28. The peripheral blades have top holes 41 and the central blade cut-out portions 32 and slots 42 to enable entrapped gases to escape. The free edges 25, 45 of the peripheral blades are of relieved contour and are spaced from the central blade by metal straps 46, 47 and 48, 49 respectively, so forming slots 43, 44 for receiving an end of the hot rolled strip. The straps 48, 49 and 46, 47 are rotatably mounted on the rods 50, 51 and- 52, 53 respectively. The mill assembly comprises driven work rolls 61, 62 and backing-up rolls 63, 64 mounted in a stand 65. Run-out tables 66, 67 carry table rolls 68, 69 and a punch roll assembly 68 comprising rolls 69, 70, the latter being operated by hydraulic means 71. Coiling reels 73 are mounted on water-cooled shafts 22 on each side of the mill stand. Each reel is in a furnace 74 having oil or gas burner nozzles 75, 76. The hot strip is deflected from the rolls into one of the reel slots 43, 44 by a hydraulically-operated deflector member 80 pivoted on a shaft 81. The pinch roll 70 is lowered just prior to coiling and after the strip has entered one of the slots 43, 44 the reel is rotated and the strip is bent over one of the peripheral blade members of the reel by a guide roller 82. The rotation of the coiler, pinch and table rolls is stopped when the strip just clears the work rolls 61, 62 and the direction of rotation is reversed to feed the strip back through the work rolls. During a rolling operation the reel, when not in use, is slowly rotated in the furnace.
