Abstract

1,005,086. Winding and reeling; roller tables. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO April 10, 1963 [April 16, 1962], No. 14578/62. Headings B3E and B3M. [Also in Division B6] Apparatus for guiding strip to coiling means comprises a side guard having a member engageable by one of the edges of the strip to restrain the strip from transverse movement, means for conveying the strip to the coiling apparatus, and means for urging the strip against the member of the side guard so that one of the edges of the strip is maintained in a predetermined relationship relative to said coiling apparatus. Prior to reception of strip S, to be wound on a mandrel 47, side guard members 16, 17 are moved inward to their operative positions above a roller table 11 by threaded shafts 18, 24 respectively driven by wormwheel units 19, 25 driven by common motors 21, 26. Piston and cylinder assemblies then retract the side guard member 17 to its open position. Sideguard members in the throat 45 before the mandrel 47 are likewise positioned. The mandrel 47 is rotated and a driven pinch roll 31 is lowered by piston and cylinder means 35 to co-operate with a driven pinch roll 33. The rolls 31, 33 may be skewed by turning their frame 32 about a pivot 37. Strip S from the run-out table of a hot strip mill is then fed on to the roller table 11 whose skewed rollers 12 driven by individual motors 13 urged the strip laterally against the side guard member 16. Once the leading end of the strip is received by the mandrel 47, the side guard member 17 is moved into its operative postion to guide the strip edge. The upper pinch roll 31 is raised and lowered again only when the strip has left the rolling mill to maintain a tension on the strip. The rollers 12 may be tapered. A second roller table 10 directs strip, passing over an apron 43, to a second coiler 28.
