A base, for carbon copying by hand onto journal leaves from account leaves attached in a loose leaf book by prongs 3, comprises an attaching plate 1, provided with hook shaped projections 2 forming notches 2<SP>1</SP> into which the prongs 3 enter to retain the base in the book, and a writing plate 5 hinged to the opposite edge to swing upwardly and preferably also displaceable longitudinally of the plate 1, the plate 5 carrying a retaining device 9, 10 fur the journal leaf and of such width that its free edge 5<SP>1</SP> wholly or partly covers the notches 2<SP>1</SP> in writing position so that the outer edge 5<SP>1</SP> bears on the attaching prongs 3. Both plates 1 and 5 are preferably bent downwardly near the prong 3 so as to fit easily into the loose leaf book and the hinge connection comprises a channel shaped guide 6 secured to plate 1 in which a runner 7 secured to plate 5 is rotatable and slidable, the plates 1 and 5 in writing position being a short distance apart. To retain the journal leaf on pins 10, a bar 9 having recesses 11 corresponding thereto, is mounted on hinges 8 at the edge of plate 5 and is lifted against springs, urging it into gripping position, by finger grips 14. Carbon paper may also be secured on the pins 10 or resilient clamps 15 may be provided, each comprising a plate of spring steel slit to provide a finger member 16<SP>1</SP> at one end, a tip 17, offset downwardly and secured to the plate 5 through holes 19, and a tip 18 which bears resiliently against the carbon paper and is lifted by pressing on the member 16<SP>1</SP>.
