Class 51(ii) In a feeding device for a shaft furnace in which a two-part sealing bell structure is used such that depression of the bell allows material to be distributed around the periphery of the shaft, whilst lifting of the bell ensures that material is directed to the centre of the shaft distributer cone depending from the bell is so surrounded by a basket grate which is attached to the bell that material distributed towards the centre of the shaft when the bell is raised is sifted the larger particles passing to the centre of the shaft and the smaller particles passing through the grate in a direction towards the periphery of the shaft. In the shaft furnace shown charge material such as limestone &c. is fed into the hopper 2 and on depression of the bell structure it falls over the upper conical surface 5 of the bell 4 towards the periphery of the shaft. The bell structure is then returned to its closed position (shown in Fig.) and fuel is introduced into the hopper. The bell is then raised allowing the fuel to fall between the distributer cone 6 and the basket grate 11 both of which are attached to the bell structure. The larger fuel particles which cannot pass between the bars forming the grate fall into the centre of the shaft whilst the particles which do pass through the grate are directed towards the shaft periphery. Rods 15 arranged in the upper end of the shaft 1 act as a sieve-grate and prevent larger pieces of fuel or charge passing to the shaft periphery. Each second grate bar 13 is curved, at its lower end, in towards the centre of the shaft.
