In a chemical balance a scale pan is supported above the beam and is stabilized by a counterbalance weight suspended therefrom and located beneath the beam. A plate 12 resting on a beam knife edge 10 supports the conical tips of a pair of pins 20 secured to a plate 24 which in turn supports the tips of a pair of pins 22, 23 secured to a pan support 13, thus the support 13 is.free to move universally about a pair of horizontal axes at right angles with one another. Suspended from support 13 by rods 14, 15, 16, 17 is a stabilizing counterweight 18, and to provide further stability, a yoke 34, from which is suspended another counterweight 32, is supported on plate 12 by a pair of pins 35, 36 which allow the weight 32 to swing in a plane parallel with the knife edge 10. A member 39 pressed outwardly from the weight 32 by a spring 40 engages the upper surface of weight 18 and damps relative movement between weights 18, 32; and a member 26 pressed outwardly from a sleeve 27 by a spring 28 is moved into engagement with the lower surface of weight 18, to damp movement thereof, when the sleeve is raised by a cam 30 against the action of a spring 29. When applied to an equi-armed balance the other pan is supported by a similar arrangement, but the invention is stated to be applicable also to balances having a fixed counterweight on one side of the beam fulcrum. Loose weight apparatus. In a modification (not shown) balance is attained by adding loose weights to the counterweight 32. Casings. A casing 3 which encloses the balance has apertures 4 through which the pan supports 13 project.
