Abstract
692,566. Buttons; buckles. CONTA, W., PRYM, H. A., and KOEHL, H., [trading as C.E.M. CO.]. Feb. 6,1950 [July 7, 1949], No. 2981/50. Class 43. A covered button or buckle includes a hollow former 3, having a continuous outer rim and a back opening 4, the edges of which lie close to said rim and are bordered by continuous inwardly directed teeth 2 which secure the covering material in place. The former 3 may be cap-shaped for a button, or of a circular or rectangular channel-shape for a buckle. The edge of the covering material. 8, Fig. 10, is further secured by a sheet-metal backing 9, a folded lip 11 of which is forced resiliently into the former 3 to bear against the teeth. Alternatively a resilient dished backing having radial slits round its periphery, or a flat backing of greater diameter than the opening 4 but of compressible material, e.g. rubber or cork composition, may be used. For a button a length of wire shaped to form a sew-on eye 5 and arms 6, the ends of which are bent round into short circumferential arms, is placed in the former 3, with the arms bearing against the inner surface thereof, before the covering is positioned. Fig. 13 shows a ring-shaped channel-sectioned form for a buckle, with an annular rear opening 21 bordered with inwardly directed teeth 22 to engage the edges of a ring of covering material stretched around the front surface. A washerlike member 24 of resilient compressible material, part of which is shown in section in Fig. 17, is inserted into the annular opening in the buckle and holds the covering material 25 tightly against the inwardly directed teeth 22, which penetrate the inner and outer circumferential edges of the washer-like member 24.
