Abstract

852,993. Bearings. BURTONWOOD ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1959 [March 1, 1958], No. 6642/58. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A sealing-ring for a ball or other bearing comprises a flat ring of synthetic plastic material having a stiff annular zone 6 and a thin outer marginal edge 9 dimensioned so that when it is inserted in a groove 5 in the outer bearing race 2 it is deformed under compression and thereby held in the groove. The inner zone 7 of the ring is tapered and ends in a sealing lip 8 that engages the inner race 1. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which the ring acts as a dust shield only, the zone 6 extends to the inner periphery of the ring. In its free state the edge 9 may be folded over to form an inwardly open U-section or it may be a thin radial vane which is folded over when the ring is inserted in the groove 5. The ring may be of polyethylene, nylon, cellulose acetate, or cellulose acetobutyrate. Specification 811,357 is referred to.
