Abstract

692,281. Ratchet clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 1, 1951 [Feb. 4, 1950], No. 2527/51. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] A cage for a one-way engaging device for retaining a series of grippers between opposite coaxial spaced gripping surfaces comprises two spaced ring portions adapted to have the grippers disposed therebetween and pairs of inner and outer cross portions extending between said ring portions and adapted to separate the grippers from each other. In the embodiment shown, wherein sprags 15 allow movement of a member 11 relative to a member 10 in the direction of the arrow 21 only, the cage comprises rings 26, 27 formed with inner and enter cross portions 28, 30 and 29, 31 respectively. Depressions 33 are formed in each ring and are notched at 3.5 to receive tabs 36 formed on the complementary cross portions of the opposite ring. The sprags are assembled on a garter spring 24 and the ring members brought together and secured by bending over the tabs 36. Spacing of the sprags is ensured by the cross portions 28-31 and depressions 33 which form an individual compartment for each sprag. In further embodiments, Figs. 8-12 (not shown), the attachment of the ring members and the formation of the cross portions are modified.
