Abstract

A method of coating articles with metal comprises forming an article of synthetic resin having a finely-divided conducting material, for example, powdered graphite or carbon black, distributed therein, abrading the surface of the article and electroplating a metal directly on to the abraded surface. The plastic material may be a thermosetting resin for example a urea, melamine or polyester resin, or a thermoplastic resin, for example a styrene resin, and is preferably a phenolic resin. There may also be included in the plastic material a fibrous material, for example, cotton flock, wood flour, nylon or asbestos. The surface of the material may be abraded by sand-blasting, by dipping in hot concentrated sulphuric acid or in a hot aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, or by treatment by organic solvents, for example, dioxane or hot phenol for phenolic moulding compounds, benzene for styrene-based compounds and acetone for cellulose-base synthetic resins.
